Before Dussehra: visit Jaipur’s Ravan Mandi

There is another side to Dussehra in Jaipur that you can see before the evening celebrations: the Ravan Mandi. In the days leading up to the festival, colourful effigies line the market near Mansarovar Metro Station, while Gopalpura Bypass and Gurjar Ki Thadi are also known for effigy makers and sellers.

Families of artisans make the effigies by hand, from small Ravans for neighbourhood celebrations to much larger ones ordered for public grounds. A visit gives you a closer look at the work behind the festival—the frames, paper decorations and finishing touches that come together before Ravana Dahan.

India Today Hindi described the market near Mansarovar Metro Station as Rajasthan’s largest Ravan Mandi in its 2023 report, with buyers also coming from other parts of Rajasthan and Haryana.

If you want to see the preparations, visit in the days before Dussehra, preferably during daylight. Ask the artisans before taking close-up photographs, keep the roadside clear and allow them space to work. This is a working market, so the experience is about meeting the makers and seeing how the effigies come together.

Best places to celebrate Dussehra in Jaipur

1. Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium

Where: Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium, north Jaipur.

This is an option if you are coming from Vidyadhar Nagar or nearby areas. Organisers have confirmed the Dussehra celebration for 20 October. Reach with time to park and walk to the viewing area.

2. Adarsh Nagar Dussehra Maidan

Where: Dussehra Maidan, Adarsh Nagar.

Adarsh Nagar is another venue with a reported 20 October programme. If you live around Adarsh Nagar or Raja Park, check this option before planning a journey across Jaipur. Confirm the entry and pickup points on the day.

3. Ramleela Maidan, New Gate

Where: Ramleela Maidan, near New Gate.

Use the New Gate landmark when checking directions. This is a separate venue from Adarsh Nagar Dussehra Maidan. Ask for the current Ramleela and Ravana Dahan programme before planning your arrival.

4. VT Road, Mansarovar

Where: VT Road, Mansarovar.

For those staying in Mansarovar or around New Sanganer Road, this is a nearby option from the shared list. VT Road is a broad location, so confirm the exact event ground and entrance with the local organiser before booking a ride.

5. Chitrakoot Stadium, Vaishali Nagar

Where: Chitrakoot Stadium, Vaishali Nagar.

If you are on the Vaishali Nagar or Chitrakoot side, check the stadium’s current Dussehra announcement. Make sure your directions lead to Chitrakoot Stadium, rather than Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium, which is in a different part of Jaipur.

6. Kumbha Marg, Pratap Nagar

Where: Kumbha Marg, Pratap Nagar.

This is the Pratap Nagar location named in the shared list. Check the exact ground and event pin locally, as Kumbha Marg alone does not identify an entrance. It is worth considering if you are travelling from the Pratap Nagar side.

7. Rashtrapati Maidan, Shastri Nagar

Where: Rashtrapati Maidan, Shastri Nagar.

For the Shastri Nagar option, look for Rashtrapati Maidan rather than searching for a general neighbourhood ground. Confirm the local committee’s programme and viewing arrangements before setting off.

Which venue should you choose?

  • North Jaipur: Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium or Rashtrapati Maidan in Shastri Nagar.
  • Adarsh Nagar and Raja Park side: Dussehra Maidan, Adarsh Nagar.
  • Mansarovar and Pratap Nagar: check VT Road or Kumbha Marg, depending on where you live.
  • Other options: Ramleela Maidan at New Gate for the old-city side; Chitrakoot Stadium for Vaishali Nagar.

What time should you reach?

Check your chosen venue’s announced start time, then leave enough time for traffic, parking and the walk inside. There is no single Ravana Dahan time for every ground. Weather or event arrangements can also affect the schedule.

Traffic and parking tips

  • Choose a venue close to your side of Jaipur; cross-city travel can take much longer on Dussehra evening.
  • Use designated parking and be prepared to walk the final stretch.
  • Avoid stopping on main roads near the ground.
  • Keep extra time for temporary diversions after Ravana Dahan.
  • If visiting with children, decide a meeting point before entering the crowd.

A simple Dussehra evening plan

Choose one venue, confirm the programme and save the location. Arrive with time to find a viewing spot behind the barriers. Decide where you will meet your family or driver afterwards, and allow time for the crowd to clear on the way out.
