A look at the old stepwell architecture in Amer.
Panna Meena ka Kund is one of those places in Jaipur that takes very little time to visit but is still worth adding to your Amer plan.
Hidden inside the old lanes near Amer Fort, this historic stepwell is known for its perfectly arranged criss-cross stairs. It is much smaller than Chand Baori in Abhaneri, but that is also what makes it easy to include in a Jaipur itinerary.
If you are already visiting Amer Fort, you do not need a separate trip for Panna Meena ka Kund. Keep around 20–30 minutes and visit both together.

The Government of India’s Incredible India portal currently lists the stepwell as open from sunrise to sunset. Recent visitor information also continues to list entry as free.
Panna Meena ka Kund is an old stepwell in Amer, believed to date back to around the 16th century.
Stepwells were not built simply to look beautiful. They were practical water-storage spaces where people could access water even when the water level dropped.
Over time, they also became places where people from the neighbourhood gathered, rested and escaped Jaipur’s heat.
That is what makes Panna Meena interesting today. What looks like a beautiful geometric photo spot was once a very practical part of everyday life in Amer. Incredible India also describes the kund as an important community and water-gathering space in the past.
This is the part everyone notices first.
Rows of narrow stairs move up and down the walls in a repeating zig-zag pattern. From the upper edge, they almost look like a geometric design rather than a functional staircase.
You may also hear a popular local story that it is difficult to use exactly the same set of steps while going down and coming back up.
It is a fun story associated with the kund, but we would treat it as local folklore rather than a historical fact.
And one important thing: visitors are often restricted from walking down the steps for safety and conservation reasons. If barricades or guards are present during your visit, stay on the viewing level rather than trying to recreate old photographs from the stairs. Recent visitor guidance also notes restricted staircase access.
Early morning is our first choice.
The weather is better, there are usually fewer people around and the light works well for photographs.
Late afternoon is another good option, particularly from October to March.
Try to avoid the middle of a summer afternoon. The visit itself is short, but the site is open-air and there is very little reason to stand there in Jaipur’s strongest heat.
At present, Panna Meena ka Kund can be visited free of charge and there is no regular monument ticket like Amer Fort or Jaigarh.
That also makes it one of the easiest heritage stops to add while exploring Amer.
Around 20–30 minutes is enough for most people.
This is not a place where you need two hours.
Walk around the upper level, look at the architecture, take a few photographs and then continue towards Amer.
If you enjoy architecture or photography, you may naturally spend a little longer.
This is the way we would recommend visiting it.
Panna Meena ka Kund is located close to Amer Fort, and Rajasthan Tourism itself recommends finding time for the stepwell while visiting Amer Palace.
A simple morning route can be:
Panna Meena ka Kund → Amer Fort → Jaigarh Fort
If Shila Devi Temple is part of your plan, you can visit it while exploring the Amer Fort complex.
This way you cover several places in the same side of Jaipur instead of travelling back and forth across the city.
If you are already going to Amer — yes.
We would not necessarily cross the entire city only for Panna Meena ka Kund, but as part of an Amer trip it makes complete sense.
It is free, it does not take much time and its architecture is quite different from the forts and palaces you will see elsewhere in Jaipur.
That is probably the best way to think about it: a short but worthwhile stop, not a half-day attraction.
